A friend of mine just pointed me to Visual Thesaurus.  Provide a word and the tool creates a visual diagram of related words and their meanings. Sort of a mind map for words.

You can try a few words for free and then it requires subscription ($19.95 per year) or buying software ($39.95).  I put in the word "genuine" and the tool created a map with the words: actual, literal, real, unfeigned, true, and echt (never heard of it but that’s part of the charm–you increase your vocabulary).
