Looking for Good Ideas in New Places

I’m chuckling this morning. I just received an email with the subject line, “How and Why Women Test You.”  Despite what you might think, this is not spam. I actually signed up to get this email at a website designed to help men get more dates with women.

At this point, you might be wondering: “Is Carol now going by the name of Carl? Is she bisexual? Is she trying to help a new client?”

To quell any rumors, I’m a happily married heterosexual woman and none of my clients have come to me with dating problems.

What I’ve done is fished in new waters for ideas that work. Let me explain.  I had been talking with a business acquaintance about podcasting and he mentioned the idea of interviewing experts.  Then he talked about someone who had done the interviewing thing pretty successfully and was charging for these interviews.  Which naturally piqued my interest. I asked for the url of the website so I could check out how this person was packaging and marketing these interviews.

My colleague sheepishly said, “Well, the url is www.doubleyourdating.com

I wasn’t sure I heard this correctly. “Did you say DOUBLE YOUR DATING?”

“Well, yes. You see, the guy behind this website was having trouble getting dates. So he interviewed people who were successful at getting dates, trying to figure out their secrets. He’s been able to do that and combined with his background in direct marketing, he’s now very wealthy. And he deserves every penny that he’s made.”

Now I was really interested. Okay, I was game. I wanted to check this website out.

When I got to the website, I realized this guy did know what he was doing. With a one-page website and a teaser, I couldn’t get to the crown jewels unless I gave him my email address and first name. Only then could I click to see more of what he offered and how he offered it. Bingo! Now I’m on his email list until I unsubscribe.  My curiosity has gotten me hooked.

After getting past the front door, so to speak, I was able see well-crafted, plain-speaking copy about the audience’s biggest problems and then what he had to offer as solutions to those problems—e-books on tips and secrets he had discovered in his research, a CD with even more explicit conversation, and more information on topics that men must think a lot about (e.g. what’s the kissing signal that I’ve been missing?)  From a female perspective, it’s pretty fascinating. From a business person’s perspective, it’s even more fascinating.

I’ve decided to stay on the email list for a few more weeks to see what else this guy knows, from a business perspective.  And if I learn about how men think and what they worry about, I’ll get the bonus of a few more laughs in my life.
