Free: Chris Anderson Sees the Future

Just after posting about trends that I wish I could have seen ten years ago, I stumble across Chris Anderson’s Wired article about Free. Fascinating essay about how digital technology has created an economy based on things being free. How do you make money by giving away free stuff? Anderson gives six different business models that he’s seeing people use.

How does this relate to A Bigger Voice?  When something is free, as in infinitely abundant, it also creates scarcity in other areas, like trust or reputation. Giving freely, to your audience, is one way to create the ongoing conversation that enables trust or develops a reputation. I have to remind myself of this.

True confession: Unconsciously, I think I have been holding back on posting to this blog, even though I’m spending lots of time researching pieces of A Bigger Voice. Part of it is not knowing where to start. There’s so much info. But another piece is worrying about intellectual property–somehow giving away "the secret sauce" without knowing it.

And intellectually, I know this is fear is unfounded, ridiculous. So I’ll start blogging more, about whatever I’m learning on this journey. I’ll also peel back the curtain a bit on other stuff I’m doing related to this topic, including starting a pilot this month to prove out the concepts of A Bigger Voice.
