Rising talent for established institutions used to come from those who could gain favor from the top of the hierarchy. New media bypasses that and allows developing stars to find their voice and their audience without being validated or confirmed by the elders. A New York Times op-ed by David Brooks on who he’s looking to for a new vision for the Republicans is a case in point. He cites several policy wonks who rose to prominence through blogging, including two who honed their ideas into a book worth taking notice of.
