Ways to Play

Great article by Pat Kane, author of the book, Play Ethic, on the different categories of play. He points to five ways that businesses could be making use of play–to develop their talent pool, to be more adaptable to change, to be more innovative.

I particularly like Kane’s definition of play: "to take reality lightly"

He goes on to clarify: "Not to ignore reality, or to live a fantasy life – but to presume there is creative potential in every situation, if you can only see the possibilities in it."

Kane references LEGO SERIOUS PLAY, a communications and problem-solving methodology for teams.  My associate, Robert Rasmussen, led the development of this methodology at LEGO and then headed up the business unit to market it. He’s now an independent consultant.
