In my work with A Bigger Voice, I’m using the Hero’s Journey to understand the elements of a client’s story. When interviewing a client, one of the questions that comes up is this:
"Who were the helpers?"
It has increased my awareness of people who have helped me during my journey. They range from a physical therapist who recommended I get a second opinion from an oral surgeon on TMJ symptoms to an engineering colleague who introduced me to a class on using more of my intuition to Judi Neal, the founder of the Association for Spirit at Work. I’ve been blessed to have many helpers, not just these three, just when I needed them and usually in the middle of reinventing myself.
What I’m realizing is that the full impact of helpers is not known until many years later, in hindsight and in the context of one’s entire life. With the perspective that comes with distance and looking at the larger picture, we know instinctively the turning point of our life. For me, that happened in the late 90’s, when I finally heard my inner voice tell me that my life had to change. Helpers led me to my inner voice and they helped me to pursue what my inner voice was telling me.
Take a moment to remember the helpers on your journey and give thanks.
