My friend, Kenny Moore, has a wonderful post about playing a different game in business, the Infinite Game. He helps me remember that including others expands the game and that the question should be, "How can I use the talents of everyone?" rather than "How do the select few serve my agenda?" Kenny’s message is one of sustainability, joy, and meaning.
Kenny is a kindred spirit, my alter ego in Brooklyn who has stayed in Corporate America to fight the good fight. I’ve often thought about the tendency of newly freed corporate souls (myself 5 years ago) who take up the life of a solopreneur, and say to themselves, "I’ll never go back!" And yet, in the kind of work that I do and the type that often attracts solopreneurs, stepping back into the fire is exactly what’s needed. It’s part of the Hero’s Journey. I’m doing more work inside companies, to help teams and leaders be more authentic, transparent, courageous, and effective. I’m grateful for the chance to step back in the fire and make a difference.
